Northwest Passage Expedition - FAQs

The Northwest Passage

Clothing and Equipment

What type of clothing is provided, what winter clothes should we bring, and what shoes should we pack?

You’ll receive an HX expedition jacket, which is windproof and water-resistant but not built for warmth. We recommend packing layers, including thin wool base layers. Waterproof trousers/pants are essential for excursions - without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac. You only need to bring shoes to wear on the ship and during excursions in South America. A thick down jacket can be sufficient, depending on your warmth preference, but it doesn’t need to be bulky.

Will we receive a jacket onboard?

Yes! All guests will receive our high-quality blue expedition jacket. At HX, we are committed to protecting the remote areas we explore for future generations. This wind- and water-resistant jacket is made from recycled materials, with a reduced carbon footprint of 7.12 kg CO2e and crafted with sustainable practices, including an Ecovadis Sustainability Rating of Platinum (top 1%). It’s available in sizes XS to XXXL.

Do we need waterproof trousers, and what gear should we bring?

Yes, you’ll need waterproof trousers. Additionally, it’s important to bring warm layers of clothing with you. Waterproof trousers are essential; without them, you may not be allowed on a Zodiac (small boat).

What kind of shoes do you recommend?

Muck boots are mandatory for nature landings and are loaned to all passengers for free. Rubber boots (similar to Muck boots, with a rubber bottom and neoprene upper) are provided and available in sizes 32-50 EU (1-15 UK and 1.5-15.5 US). We have different types of boots, including the ones for wide calves. Should you prefer, you can bring your own; however, please note that the requirement is that the sole and lower part of the boot must be rubber boots/wellies. These boots are mandatory and will go through biosecurity cleaning and a biocide dip when leaving and returning to the ship. Also, remember to pack shoes to wear on the ship.

Can I bring my own boots?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own boots. We recommend sturdy, waterproof boots with good ankle support and strong, non-slip soles designed for rough terrain. Look for boots with deep tread patterns that provide excellent grip on wet and uneven surfaces - similar to hiking or trekking boots made for muddy or rocky conditions. Please avoid smooth-soled boots or those without ankle support, as they may not be safe for our landings.

To ensure safety and protect the environment, our team will inspect boots at the start of the voyage. If your boots don’t meet these standards, you may need to borrow or purchase appropriate boots from us. Packing suitable boots ahead of time helps avoid inconvenience during your trip.

Are crampons or boot spikes allowed?  Yes, you may bring crampons or boot spikes, though they are entirely optional and not necessary. Please note they must be sanitized before and after each landing, and for safety reasons, they are not permitted in the Zodiacs (small boats).

Can you recommend brands for waterproof gloves or trousers?

We recommend Helly Hansen (remember to use your online HX Explorers discount code if you are a member of our loyalty programme) or other companies that offer high-quality ski gloves and waterproof trousers.

What type of gloves are best?

Liner gloves paired with thicker wind and waterproof gloves is ideal.

Will we receive a packing list?

Yes, you’ll receive a detailed packing list in your travel documents, which will be sent approximately one month before your trip.

Can we bring walking sticks on board?

Yes, you can bring walking sticks on board. We also provide walking sticks for all guests on all landings, and the expedition team will take them ashore for you.

Do we need a hat?

Yes, a well-fitting hat or one with a chinstrap is recommended due to the windy conditions. Additionally, because of the intense sun, some guests prefer a hat with a peak to keep the sun off their face.

Can we bring a waterproof case for our phones?

Yes, you can bring a waterproof case to protect your phone from water splashes during Zodiac (small boat) rides. We also recommend using a neck strap for extra safety and convenience.

Are binoculars provided?  Binoculars are not provided onboard, so we recommend bringing your own if you’d like to enhance your wildlife and landscape viewing. For best results, we suggest models with 8x or 10x magnification and an objective lens of 32mm to 42mm.

What currency should we bring, and is there an ATM onboard?

There is no ATM or currency exchange available onboard, but the ship is all-inclusive and uses Euros as its onboard currency. You won't need cash while on the ship itself. However, for landings and any personal expenses ashore, we recommend bringing a small amount of the following:

  • Canadian Dollars (CAD) – for landings in Canada

  • US Dollars (USD) – for Nome, Alaska

  • Danish Kroner (DKK) – for Greenland

Note: USD alone may not be sufficient in all regions.

Is there a HX App?

Yes, the HX app is your digital companion while onboard. You can use it to view the daily programme, book excursions, and make table reservations in Aune and Lindström for all mealtimes. While the app is only available for use onboard, we recommend downloading it before boarding, as onboard WiFi may be limited in remote regions. You'll receive login information during embarkation and can download here: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/travel-hx/id6670555362 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.travelhxapp.TravelHXApp&hl=en_GB&gl=GB

Can I bring my own alcoholic beverages onboard?

No, only alcohol from our bar, restaurants, and cabin mini bars can be consumed onboard. If you bring alcohol with you, please hand it to our crew during embarkation, and they’ll return it to you on the final day of the sailing. However, with our all-inclusive service, there's no need to worry!

How will I receive my travel documents?

All travel documents will be sent via email for your convenience. If you’ve booked through a travel agent, they may provide these directly - please check with them if you’re unsure or have not yet received your documents.

Can I upgrade my flights to Business Class or Economy Comfort?

Yes, upgrades may be available. If you would like to explore this option, please contact your sales office or booking agent, who can advise you on availability and pricing.

Should I bring a mobile phone?

We recommend bringing a mobile phone. It will allow you to access our onboard app, which provides daily schedules, important updates, and general voyage information. It’s also helpful for staying connected and capturing memories along the way.

Will I need a visa or eTA?

You’ll need a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity beyond the end of your trip—no matter your nationality. It’s your responsibility to check and obtain any visas or travel authorizations required for the countries we visit. Here are a few general guidelines (but always double-check for your specific case):

  • Canadian eTA is required if you’re flying into or transiting through Canada, but not if you’re only entering by ship.

  • US citizens don’t need an eTA or ESTA.

  • US Green Card holders do need a Canadian eTA if flying into Canada.

  • European travellers (like Germans) with a valid ESTA for the U.S. may still need an eTA for Canada if arriving there by air.

Check your travel documents - visa requirements are often noted there. If you’ve already received your documents and a visa is still needed, it may still be possible to apply for an eTA or ESTA online. However, please be sure to check this for yourself, as visa and entry requirements can change and this advice may not be fully up to date.

Is there drinking water onboard?

Yes, the water onboard is desalinated and highly purified for your safety and comfort.

Are drones allowed on the ship or in the Northwest Passage?

Unfortunately, recreational use of drones is not allowed either on the ship or during excursions and activities off the ship. The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) has banned recreational drone use by passengers throughout the Arctic. This ban applies to all AECO member operations. Drones may only be used for special purposes with operator permission and within regulatory limits.

Is food included at all restaurants?

Yes, as part of our inclusive offering, meals are included at two restaurants. However, dining at Lindstrom (premium) requires an additional charge unless you’re staying in a suite, where meals are included.

What types of card payments are accepted onboard?

The ship accepts Visa, MasterCard, and AMEX for onboard purchases. However, thanks to the all-inclusive nature of your voyage, most of your needs are already covered!

Is there a bar on board, and is alcohol charged separately?

Yes, there is a bar onboard. Our expeditions are all-inclusive, meaning most drinks are free. Some selected premium drinks are available for an additional cost.

Can I tip onboard servers?

Tipping is not expected at HX, as service charges are not added to your bill. If you wish to thank the crew, you can leave a tip at Reception or in the tipping box. Collected tips are shared among crew members, but please do not tip individuals. Officers and the Expedition Team are excluded from this.

What is the bed size, and are hair dryers available?

The bed size will depend on the cabin you have chosen. However, hair dryers will be available in any cabin - on any ship.

Can I bring electric hair tongs onboard?

Yes, you can. Please note that the sockets are European standard.

Is there a professional photographer on board who shares their photos?

Yes, we have an onboard photographer on every expedition. They share a selection of photos in your HX Logbook, which you’ll receive after returning home.

Health, Safety, and Medical Questions

What onboard medical facilities are available?

There is a medical centre staffed with one doctor and at least one nurse.

Does the onboard medical facility provide prescribed medication?

No, the onboard medical facility does not supply prescribed medication. It’s important to pack enough of your prescribed medicine to cover the entire length of your trip.

Do I need to complete a medical check before travelling?

No, a medical check is not required before your trip to the Northwest Passage, but given the remote nature of the destination we recommend you are in good health before you travel.

Do you recommend taking medication for seasickness, and when should we apply sea sickness patches?

Please consult your doctor for further guidance on seasickness medication. Patches work best if applied before you start feeling sick.

Social & Communication

Is there a way for solo travellers to mix with fellow solo travellers?

Yes, we have a ‘welcome’ event for solo travellers, typically on the first or second day on board. There are solo tables during both lunch and dinner, and the head waiter will accommodate any requests.

Are cabins shared for solo travellers?

No, solo travellers are provided with a private cabin.

What evening entertainment is there?

Evening entertainment includes lectures, workshops, wildlife viewing, and access to the Science Centre. Additionally, there are bars and restaurants on board for a relaxing evening.

What benefits do solo travellers receive when booking with HX?

Solo travellers can find reduced solo supplements on many sailings.

Why is it important to book early as a solo traveller?

HX sets aside cabins with reduced solo supplements, but once they sell out, the full solo supplement applies. Early booking ensures you secure your preferred cabin.

What kind of social atmosphere can solo travellers expect onboard?

HX fosters a warm and welcoming community for solo travellers, with flexible dining arrangements and opportunities to socialize or enjoy solitude as preferred.

Temperature, Weather & Environmental Factors

What are the typical daily temperatures in the Northwest Passage?

Temperatures vary by season but generally range from -5°C to 8°C (23°F to 46°F). It tends to feel warmer on sunny days and colder when it’s windy.

What is temperature in my cabin?

Cabins have adjustable thermostats for your comfort.

What’s the sea ice situation?

You’ll mostly see sea ice, though you might also spot glacier ice - which is larger and sits higher above the water. The transit through the Northwest Passage is what makes this journey so legendary. Our ships are ice-strengthened, and each voyage is assessed in advance based on current ice conditions. Ice is a normal part of the experience and may affect how quickly we travel, depending on the time of year.

If the Northwest Passage is closed, are there alternative routes?

Each voyage is carefully assessed based on the latest ice conditions. In the unlikely event that the Northwest Passage is closed, alternative plans are in place - or in rare cases, the voyage may not go ahead. Your safety is paramount, and as with any true expedition, flexibility is part of the journey. The situation will be closely monitored leading up to departure.

Is it possible to see the aurora?

Yes, depending on when you travel. If you're sailing toward the end of the summer season into early autumn, there’s a chance of seeing the northern lights - especially later at night. If they appear, the team will make an announcement, so you don’t miss them!

Excursions and Pre/Post Trip

Where can I find the full list of excursions and their costs?

You can find the full list here: Excursion Catalog

Can I review and pre-book optional excursions before the cruise?

Yes. About 30 days before embarkation, you’ll receive your travel documentation, which includes descriptions of all optional excursions. You can then contact Customer Service (CSC)/GX to make pre-bookings.

Do I need to pre-book included excursions?

No need - included excursions will be automatically pre-booked for you through the HX app.

Can I book both an included and an optional excursion on the same day?

Yes, you can join one included activity and also book an optional excursion on the same day, depending on availability and scheduling. Details will be presented onboard.

How will I know which excursions are available each day?

On Day 2 of the cruise, the Expedition Coordinator (EC) will present both included and optional activities in the lecture room.

  • Guests who have not yet pre-booked optional excursions will then have 24 - 48 hours to make their selections via the app.

  • On Amundsen, more time will be available for booking due to the longer sea days at the beginning of the cruise.

  • On Nansen, there is only one sea day, so the booking window will be shorter.

What if I prefer to decide once I’m onboard?

No problem. The EC will walk you through all optional excursion offerings onboard and guide you in using the HX app to book them directly.

Will I be able to join excursions daily?

Yes, there will be at least one included activity available for everyone each day. Participation is encouraged. Our expedition team will do their best to organise excursions based on weather and sea conditions.

How many local village stops will there be?

There will be 6 community stops: Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Pond Inlet, Gjoa Haven, Cambridge Bay, and Ulukhaktok.

Are there any port stops or just zodiac landings?

There are six possible community and port visits. How you get ashore depends on the location.

Will we stop along the Alaska or Yukon coasts (e.g., Kaktovik)?

No, there will be no stops along the Alaska or Yukon coastlines. However, we will take full advantage of navigation periods to observe wildlife. Be sure to bring binoculars and spend time on the outdoor decks. You can also enjoy onboard amenities such as the gym, spa, and our Explorers Lounge.

Are there opportunities to interact or trade with locals?

Yes. During community visits, some local vendors may offer handmade crafts. We recommend bringing Canadian dollars, US dollars for Nome and Danish kroner for Greenland.

How will Zodiac excursions be managed?

You’ll be assigned to groups for Zodiac excursions. The number of trips depends on the weather, but we’ll do our best to get you out on as many as possible.

How many Zodiacs are onboard, and how many guests can they accommodate?

We have a total of 17 Zodiacs.

  • For Zodiac cruising: up to 10 guests per Zodiac

  • For shuttling (transfers): up to 12 guests per Zodiac

What are the lengths of hikes in Greenland and Salmon River?

In Greenland, the Ilulissat hike is about 3.5 km, and the Sisimiut hike is unguided. At Salmon River, hikes last between 1.5 to 2.5 hours over uneven ground.

How hard is the Salmon Creek hike?

It’s rated 4 out of 5 for difficulty, so it’s a bit challenging and not recommended if you have limited mobility.

When can we book activities in Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven, or Port Inlet?

You can pre-book with your travel agent or once onboard, though spots can be limited.

Will we visit Franklin Expedition ship sites?

No, but you’ll have a chance to tour a research vessel involved in the search.

What is the refund policy for excursions?

  • ✅ If HX cancels an excursion due to weather: Guests will receive a full refund.

  • ✅ If guests cannot join due to a medical issue and provide a doctor's sick note: A refund will be issued.

  • 🔁 If an activity (e.g., kayaking) is cancelled, guests can be rebooked for another time.

  • ❌ If a guest misses an excursion for personal reasons: No refund is provided.

Will breakfast be available at the Clarion Hotel before the early flight?

Yes! Breakfast is served at the hotel, and there’s also food available on the flight.

Wildlife

Will there be wildlife announcements onboard?

Yes, the expedition team will make announcements when there are exciting wildlife sightings.

What are the chances of seeing narwhals, walrus, polar bears, or belugas?

Sightings can never be guaranteed, but your best chance is from the outdoor decks. Keep your camera ready!
