The Polar Plunge: A Rite of the Bold

Just before you leap, everything goes still. The cold air bites, the white horizon stretches ahead, doubt flickers... Then you jump, suddenly wide awake in one of the coldest, most exhilarating places on Earth.

What Is a Polar Plunge?

A polar plunge is exactly what it sounds like: an unforgettable dive into icy polar waters. A quick, bracing dip in seas that hover just above freezing.

It’s part thrill, part initiation, a moment that marks your place among the courageous who have dared to embrace the environment in the most raw way.

On HX expedition cruises, guests have the opportunity to take the plunge in extraordinary locations such as Antarctica, Greenland, and Norway (depending on the weather and sea conditions, of course). Most guests wear swimwear, though some choose long-sleeve tops for a touch of extra warmth and comfort before taking the leap.

Why Do People Do It?

Some do it for the thrill, others because it’s a personal milestone – the ultimate test of nerve and spirit.

There’s something about being immersed in icy waters, surrounded awe-inspiring scenery and fellow travellers cheering you on, that makes you realise just how far you’ve come to be here. In that moment, you feel utterly alive.

The Science of Cold Water

Beyond the rush, there’s growing evidence that cold-water immersion benefits both body and mind. Studies suggest it can boost circulation, enhance immune response, and increase alertness by stimulating the release of endorphins and adrenaline. The sudden exposure to cold also triggers the body’s 'fight or flight' response, raising heart rate and oxygen intake, which can lead to improved mood and mental clarity long after you’ve warmed up again.

You might come out of the water gasping and laughing, cheeks flushed, heart racing, but also glowing with unmistakable energy. It’s the kind of joy that doesn’t fade quickly; the kind that reminds you that being alive is, in itself, an adventure.

Moments from the Plunge

“I doubted the sanity of a polar plunge. The water and air temperatures were just barely above freezing! I ran across the beach and dove head-first into the sea before I could think about it. The electricity of the Arctic water took my breath away. I shivered, alive with exhilaration.” — Emily, United States, Greenland Expedition.

Stories like Emily’s are common among those who take the leap. Each plunge becomes a shared moment of triumph, part laughter, part disbelief, and all adrenaline. It’s the kind of memory that connects travellers long after the journey ends.

How It Works on an HX Expedition

On select HX expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, the polar plunge is an optional, included experience for those who dare, typically offered once per trip, depending on conditions.

In Norway, for example, we offer the Nordic Sauna and Polar Plunge experience, a bracing, unforgettable Arctic ritual set against the backdrop of a tiny fishing village framed by peaks.

Our expert Expedition Team ensures everything is done safely and with care, from securing the landing site to monitoring conditions. Our photographer will be on hand to capture the proof of your bravery.
