Antarctica Expedition - FAQs

What to pack for Antarctica

Clothing and Equipment

What type of clothing is provided, what winter clothes should we bring, and what shoes should we pack?

You’ll receive a HX expedition jacket, which is windproof and water-resistant but not built for warmth. We recommend packing layers, including thin wool base layers. Waterproof trousers/pants are essential for excursions - without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac. You only need to bring shoes to wear on the ship and during excursions in South America. A thick down jacket can be sufficient, depending on your warmth preference, but it doesn’t need to be bulky.

Will we receive a jacket onboard?

Yes! We’re excited to announce that all guests traveling to Antarctica in 2024/25 will receive our brand-new, high-quality blue expedition jacket. At HX, we are committed to protecting the remote areas we explore for future generations. This wind and water-resistant jacket is made from recycled materials, with a reduced carbon footprint of 7.12 kg CO2e and crafted with sustainable practices, including an Ecovadis Sustainability Rating of Platinum (top 1%). It’s available in sizes XS to XXXL.

Do we need waterproof trousers, and what gear should we bring?

Yes, you’ll need waterproof trousers. Additionally, it’s important to bring warm layers of clothing with you. Waterproof trousers are essential; without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac.

I’m allergic to wool - what are the alternatives for base layers?

If you’re allergic to wool, natural fibres like cotton or bamboo are good alternatives. Bamboo has similar properties to wool, but some guests prefer cotton for comfort. Try to avoid synthetic materials, as they can make you sweat and then feel cold. Sticking to natural fibres will help keep you comfortable and warm.

What kind of shoes do you recommend?

Rubber boots are mandatory for stepping ashore in Antarctica. We’ll loan them to you for free. Our boots are available in sizes 35-50 EU (2.5–14 UK / 3.5–16 US). We list sizes up to UK 14, but if you require a larger size, contact us at your earliest convenience and we’ll be happy to assist. We also have children’s sizes onboard. We have different types of boots, including the ones for wide calves. Should you prefer, you can bring your own; however, please note that the requirement is that the sole and lower part of the boot must be rubber boots/wellies. These boots are mandatory and will go through biosecurity cleaning and a biocide dip when leaving and returning to the ship. Also, remember to pack shoes to wear on the ship.

Can you recommend brands for waterproof gloves or trousers?

We do not have specific clothing brand recommendations, but advise that you bring high-quality ski gloves and waterproof trousers.

Do I need hiking boots?

Yes, you’ll need hiking boots if you’re visiting the Falkland Islands or if your voyage includes stops in South America. However, if you're on an Antarctic-only voyage, hiking boots are not necessary, as muck boots are provided for use in Antarctica. You can also use the muck boots in the Falklands, so bringing your own hiking boots is optional.

What type of gloves are best?

Liner gloves paired with thicker wind and waterproof gloves is ideal.

Do I need sunglasses or ski goggles?

Neither sunglasses nor ski goggles are required, but you’re welcome to bring them if you’d like. They can sometimes be helpful for extra visibility in bright or windy conditions.

What is the luggage allowance for charter flights?

If you’ve booked with HX, each person can bring one checked bag (23 kg) and one carry-on bag (8 kg).

Do we need shoe cleats or spikes?

No, spikes are not permitted, and you won’t need them for your trip.

Do we need a hat?

Yes, a well-fitting hat or one with a chinstrap is recommended due to the windy conditions. Additionally, because of the intense sun, some guests prefer a hat with a peak to keep the sun off their face.

Can we bring a waterproof case for our phones?

Yes, you can bring a waterproof case to protect your phone from water splashes during Zodiac rides. We also recommend using a neck strap for extra safety and convenience.

Do I need to bring binoculars, and what type should I choose?

How many groups can participate depends on the sea and ice conditions as well as the number of passengers who sign up. While we strive to accommodate as many groups as possible, completing all groups is not guaranteed.

How do I register for activities?

All camping activities are optional add-ons and can be signed up for once on board. For more detailed information on this topic, click here.

This promise is valid for new bookings on Antarctica cruises departing from October 1st, 2024. The Medical Screening Form must be submitted via the Vikand portal at least four weeks prior to departure. Forms submitted after this period may not qualify for a refund. This offer does not apply to rescheduled or cancelled cruises, and claims must be submitted within a specified time after your return date.

If your cabin doesn’t have one, or if you have a larger supply that won’t fit, the medical centre can store it for you securely. To make things easy, please add this as a special request when booking so the crew is aware and can be ready to help.
