Galápagos Expedition - FAQs

Clothing and Equipment

What type of sunscreen should I bring for the Galápagos?

Reef-safe sunscreen is essential to protect marine life. Please avoid products containing oxybenzone, as these are harmful to the reef and won’t comply with our requirements. While you can purchase sunscreen once you arrive in Ecuador, we recommend bringing your own from home for a wider selection.

Should I bring insect repellent?

Yes, particularly December to May, it’s best to bring repellent from home as there’s a greater variety available. It is good to note that some products conveniently combine both sun and insect protection.

What kind of footwear should I pack?

Medium-range hiking boots with good traction are ideal for rocky terrain. Don’t forget to pack something comfier for onboard, like sandals. Wet shoes can also be helpful for landings where you have to step into water.

Is there somewhere for guests to sit to change footwear (water shoes to runners) after a landing?

There are no designated seating areas for changing footwear. Most guests choose to sit on the beach or rocks to change their shoes.

What gear does HX provide?

HX provides all the essential gear you’ll need for activities, including snorkelling equipment. Specifically, we supply a small rucksack, snorkelling gear, and a water bottle to keep you ready for your adventures.

How does the snorkelling gear rental work?

Snorkelling gear is provided free of charge and includes masks, safety jackets, snorkels, flippers, and wetsuits. We offer a range of sizes and equipment will be issued on the first day. If necessary, size exchanges can be arranged during refit sessions.

Should I bring my own snorkelling gear?

While snorkelling gear is provided, you're welcome to bring your own, especially if you use prescription lenses. Our masks are standard adult sizes, so it’s best to bring your own gear if you have specific requirements.

What type of wetsuits do you provide?

We provide 3mm shortie wetsuits. Many guests also wear rash guards, and some prefer to go without wetsuits altogether - it’s a personal choice.

Do you supply a waterproof rucksack?

We provide a rucksack, but it is not waterproof. We recommend bringing your own waterproof rucksack if needed for extra protection.

Is there an onboard dress code?

There’s no formal dress code. Comfortable, casual clothing is perfect for most activities. If you wish to dress up, that is perfectly fine as well.

Activities & Excursions

No, all our activities and excursions on the cruise element are included at no extra cost.

How do I register for activities?

What is a small expedition boat?

A small expedition boat is a small, motorized inflatable boat used during expedition cruises for landings, wildlife viewing, and exploring areas inaccessible to larger ships.

What level of fitness is required for activities?

Activities require some physical effort, such as getting in and out of small expedition boats. Our guides assess the group’s capabilities, but ultimately, you choose what activities to partake in, knowing your own fitness levels. If you can climb in and out of a small boat, you will be able to enjoy the vast majority of the experience.

What’s the difficulty level for getting on and off the small expedition boats or boats from the ship to shore?

It really depends on your mobility level, but it’s been compared to the question of whether you can get in and out of a chair independently.

How difficult are the walks/hikes, and how long are they?

The walks are generally not very difficult, with minimal uphill and most trails ranging from 1 to 2 miles in length. The terrain can be rocky, so it's important to bring comfortable footwear for the best experience.

How many swimming/snorkelling opportunities are there?

Swimming and snorkelling opportunities depend on the itinerary of the voyage. However, please note that activities such as kayaking, boat rides, and hikes are also available.

Are some of the stops on the itineraries small boat cruising/snorkelling only?

This varies by itinerary. While some stops focus primarily on boat cruising, snorkelling is never the only main activity. Usually, there will be a hike or boat ride followed by optional activities such as snorkelling, kayaking, or glass-bottom boat rides.

How many people fit into one of our small expedition boats? Do you go out in groups of more than one boat at a time?

Each small expedition boat accommodates up to 20 passengers. Groups are capped at 16 guests per guide. When there’s no physical landing spot, cruising with small expedition boats is done in groups of up to 16 guests per guide.
