Explore Farsund, a coastal town where privateering history meets Norway's "coast of light."

Farsund sits at the mouth of the Lygdalsfjorden, a sheltered harbour that drew merchant ships long before it became a town. During the Napoleonic Wars, local captains held royal letters of marque — licensed to seize enemy vessels — a privateering past the town still celebrates. Stroll the quiet streets and you will find white wooden houses in the Art Nouveau style, rebuilt after the great fire of 1901, climbing the hillside on steps rather than roads. Walk up to Varbak viewpoint for panoramic views across the fjords. Further afield lies the Lista peninsula, Norway's "coast of light." Here, sandy beaches and flat heathland open to the sea and one of the country's most important resting places for migratory birds.
