Please note that while we strive to ensure this information is accurate and up to date, some details may change over time or vary depending on your specific voyage. Entry requirements, visas, health documentation, and personal travel responsibilities are always the responsibility of each guest to verify and complete. We strongly recommend checking official government websites, your personalised HX travel documents, and any pre‑departure updates provided by HX for the most current guidance before travelling.

Clothing & Equipment

What type of clothing should I pack for Alaska and British Columbia?

recommend packing versatile layers to suit the region’s variable coastal weather. Layering is ideal for both colder and warmer conditions, as temperatures can change quickly and layers allow you to adjust throughout the day. Essential items include a warm thermal or down jacket, fleece or wool jumpers, wool or thermal base layers, warm socks, and a hat or headband that covers your ears. Waterproof trousers are mandatory for small-boat landings and expedition cruising.

Will we receive a jacket onboard?

Yes. All guests travelling with HX in 2026 receive a complimentary, high quality blue expedition jacket. It is wind and water-resistant and made from recycled materials with a low carbon footprint.

Do I need waterproof trousers?

Yes. Waterproof trousers are required for landings and small expedition boat activities. You may not be allowed to disembark without them.

What kind of footwear is recommended?

You’ll need waterproof, sturdy hiking boots for shore hikes, as conditions can be uneven, slippery, or muddy. Comfortable non‑slip shoes are recommended for onboard use.

Are boots or equipment provided?

Yes. HX provides boots, trekking poles, and other activity equipment you may need during the voyage.

Do I need gloves or other accessories?

Yes. Bring waterproof, thermal gloves and warm accessories such as a scarf or fleece buff. Sunglasses and high‑factor sunscreen are useful due to reflected sunlight from water and ice.

What useful additional items should I bring?

We recommend a small waterproof 20L bag for landings, a camera with spare batteries, binoculars, UV‑protective sunglasses, lip balm, moisturiser, and a phone case with a strap.

What is the luggage allowance on charter flights?

For Alaska charter flights, each guest may bring:

  • 1 checked bag (23 kg / 50 lbs)

  • 1 carry‑on bag (8 kg / 17 lbs, max 22" × 14" × 9")

Will we receive a packing list?

Yes. Your travel documents emailed about one month before departure include a full packing list.

Will I need to submit my clothing size before the trip?

Yes. Before departure, you’ll receive a link to complete your Ship Manifest Information Form, which includes a section for clothing sizes. This helps the crew prepare the correct gear for you. Sizes are only a guideline—if something doesn't fit, you can easily exchange it onboard.

Are hairdryers available in the cabins?

Yes. Every cabin includes a hairdryer, so you don’t need to pack one.

Activities & Excursions

Please note that guests may pre‑book one shore excursion per port before travelling. This applies to both included and optional experiences. During your voyage, a wider selection of activities will be offered once onboard, depending on the destination and weather conditions. If you’d like to take part in more than one experience, our Expedition Team will work with you onboard to accommodate this wherever possible. While the team will always do their utmost to support guests wishing to participate in multiple excursions during the day, we’re unable to guarantee in advance that excursions can be combined due to the flexible nature of expedition itineraries.

How many excursions can I do in a day?

In most ports, you’ll usually be able to enjoy one included activity and one optional excursion. This can vary depending on weather , excursion timings and local conditions, but your daily program will make it easy to plan.

Do I need prior kayaking experience?

You don’t need to be an expert. As long as you can swim and join the required safety briefing, you’re welcome to take part.

Are crampons or spikes necessary?

They’re not required, but they can be helpful early in the season if conditions are icy. If you’re unsure, feel free to bring them — or ask the Expedition Team when you’re onboard.
