Download your copy below and start getting ready for the adventure that awaits.
Clothing and Equipment
What type of clothing is provided, what winter clothes should we bring, and what shoes should we pack?
You’ll receive a HX expedition jacket, which is windproof and water-resistant but not built for warmth. We recommend packing layers, including thin wool base layers. Waterproof trousers/pants are essential for excursions - without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac. You only need to bring shoes to wear on the ship and during excursions in South America. A thick down jacket can be sufficient, depending on your warmth preference, but it doesn’t need to be bulky.
Will we receive a jacket onboard?
Yes! All guests traveling to Antarctica will receive our brand-new, high-quality blue expedition jacket. At HX, we are committed to protecting the remote areas we explore for future generations. This wind and water-resistant jacket is made from recycled materials, with a reduced carbon footprint of 7.12 kg CO2e and crafted with sustainable practices, including an Ecovadis Sustainability Rating of Platinum (top 1%). It’s available in sizes XS to XXXL.
Do we need waterproof trousers, and what gear should we bring?
Yes, you’ll need waterproof trousers. Additionally, it’s important to bring warm layers of clothing with you. Waterproof trousers are essential; without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac.
I’m allergic to wool - what are the alternatives for base layers?
If you’re allergic to wool, natural fibres like cotton or bamboo are good alternatives. Bamboo has similar properties to wool, but some guests prefer cotton for comfort. Try to avoid synthetic materials, as they can make you sweat and then feel cold. Sticking to natural fibres will help keep you comfortable and warm.
What kind of shoes do you recommend?
Rubber boots are mandatory for stepping ashore in Antarctica. We’ll loan them to you for free. Our boots are available in sizes 35-50 EU (2.5–14 UK / 3.5–16 US). We list sizes up to UK 14, but if you require a larger size, contact us at your earliest convenience and we’ll be happy to assist. We also have children’s sizes onboard. We have different types of boots, including the ones for wide calves. Should you prefer, you can bring your own; however, please note that the requirement is that the sole and lower part of the boot must be rubber boots/wellies. These boots are mandatory and will go through biosecurity cleaning and a biocide dip when leaving and returning to the ship. Also, remember to pack shoes to wear on the ship.
Can you recommend brands for waterproof gloves or trousers?
We do not have specific clothing brand recommendations, but advise that you bring high-quality ski gloves and waterproof trousers.
Do I need hiking boots?
Yes, you’ll need hiking boots if you’re visiting the Falkland Islands or if your voyage includes stops in South America. However, if you're on an Antarctic-only voyage, hiking boots are not necessary, as muck boots are provided for use in Antarctica. You can also use the muck boots in the Falklands, so bringing your own hiking boots is optional.
What type of gloves are best?
Liner gloves paired with thicker wind and waterproof gloves is ideal.
Do I need sunglasses or ski goggles?
Neither sunglasses nor ski goggles are required, but you’re welcome to bring them if you’d like. They can sometimes be helpful for extra visibility in bright or windy conditions.
What is the luggage allowance for charter flights?
If you’ve booked with HX, each person can bring one checked bag (23 kg) and one carry-on bag (8 kg).
Will we receive a packing list?
Yes, you’ll receive a detailed packing list in your travel documents, which will be sent approximately one month before your trip.
Can we bring walking sticks on board?
Yes, you can bring walking sticks on board. We also provide walking sticks for all guests on all landings, and the expedition team will take them ashore for you.
Do we need shoe cleats or spikes?
No, spikes are not permitted, and you won’t need them for your trip.
Do we need a hat?
Yes, a well-fitting hat or one with a chinstrap is recommended due to the windy conditions. Additionally, because of the intense sun, some guests prefer a hat with a peak to keep the sun off their face.
Can we bring a waterproof case for our phones?
Yes, you can bring a waterproof case to protect your phone from water splashes during Zodiac rides. We also recommend using a neck strap for extra safety and convenience.
Do I need to bring binoculars, and what type should I choose?
Yes, we recommend bringing a pair so you don’t miss out on the amazing wildlife and scenery. For the best experience, choose binoculars with 8x or 10x magnification and an objective lens size of 32mm or 42mm.
Can I use my own custom insoles in the loaned boots?
Yes. You keep the same pair of muck boots for the duration of your voyage, so you're welcome to insert your own custom insoles for a better fit.
Are the provided boots insulated?
Yes, the muck boots we loan are insulated and usually quite warm. If you need extra warmth you can wear two pairs of socks, though most guests find a single pair plenty.
Can I wear the rubber boots on deck or around the ship?
Yes, you can wear the loaned rubber boots on deck — just not in the restaurants. You'll also want to pack a comfortable pair of shoes or trainers for moving around the ship.
Can I try on and swap jacket and boot sizes onboard?
Yes. You'll receive an HX expedition jacket and boots on embarkation, and you can try them on and swap sizes as needed. The expedition team will host fitting sessions so you can find the right fit, including wide-calf boot options.
I already have an HX jacket from a previous trip — can I get credit instead?
Yes. If you already have an HX expedition jacket, you can receive a €45 onboard credit instead. Speak to the team at embarkation.
Is the expedition jacket mine to keep after the voyage?
Yes, the HX expedition jacket is yours to keep after the cruise.
When and where do I receive my jacket — Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, or onboard?
Your HX expedition jacket will be waiting for you onboard the ship when you embark. Jackets aren't provided in Buenos Aires or Ushuaia before embarkation, so bring suitable outerwear for your time in the cities and while travelling to the ship.
Can I dry wet gear in my cabin?
Yes, you can dry items that get wet during excursions in your cabin. There are also clothes lines in some of the bathrooms.
Do you recommend a dry bag or backpack for landings?
We don't recommend a specific brand, but a small, durable, weather-resistant daypack of roughly 10–25 litres is ideal for carrying your camera, water bottle, extra layers and personal items on and off Zodiacs. Keep it light — you'll carry it throughout landings and walks.
Do waterproof trousers go over or inside the muck boots?
Over the top of the boots — this gives an extra layer of waterproofness and stops water running in at the top of the boot.
Can I wear ski pants instead of separate waterproof trousers?
Ski pants can work, as long as they're fully waterproof rather than just water-resistant — you may be splashed during Zodiac operations. Many experienced travellers prefer a wool or thermal base layer under lightweight waterproof shell trousers, as this is more versatile and easier to adjust. Look for trousers with wide legs that fit over the boots, and full-length side zips for easy on and off.
What about extra baggage, medical equipment, or a higher allowance on charter flights?
The standard charter allowance is one checked bag (23 kg) and one carry-on bag (8 kg), plus a personal item up to 3 kg. Medical equipment such as a CPAP machine doesn't count towards your carry-on allowance — please let your HX booking agent know so we can note it for the airline. If your HX-booked international flight includes a higher baggage allowance, we'll honor that on the charter too. Additional or overweight bags can be arranged for a fee via your HX booking agent, subject to the limited cargo capacity of the charter aircraft. There's no piece limit on checked luggage — only the 23 kg weight limit — so you may check several items as long as the total stays within 23 kg.
Activities & Excursions
What activities are included?
All passengers can enjoy a variety of included activities such as nature landings, expedition cruising, wildlife spotting, Polar Plunges, lectures, and workshops. These activities are designed to enhance your experience without requiring additional sign-ups. Explore all activities in Antarctica.
Are there optional activities that are not included?
Yes, we offer several optional activities that require registration onboard and may have limited capacity. These include kayaking, snowshoeing, the science boat (Citizen Science programme), and camping. Please note that kayaking, snowshoeing, and camping come at an additional cost, while the science boat is free. Some activities, such as kayaking, also have mandatory briefings that you must attend before participating.
Can you pre book trips?
You can pre book some excursions in Buenos Aires before or after the voyage, but nothing can be booked for Antarctica voyage itself, unless your itinerary includes the Falklands
Are there any experience or fitness requirements for using Zodiacs?
Our Zodiacs are designed for all guests. The main requirement is being able to get in and out of the Zodiac safely and comfortably.
Our expedition team is always on hand to provide guidance and support, ensuring you can enjoy the experience safely. If you can board and disembark comfortably, you’ll be able to take part and enjoy exploring the polar landscapes from the water.
Are there any experience or fitness requirements for kayaking?
Our kayaking program is designed to accommodate all levels. The primary requirement is the ability to get in and out of the kayak safely and comfortably.
We offer two types of kayaking experiences:
Sea Explorer Kayak: A sturdy, classic kayak suited for longer journeys
Discovery Kayak: Inflatable kayaks, ideal for beginners and shorter excursions.
Our expedition team is available to provide guidance and support, ensuring all participants can enjoy the activity safely. With increased capacity, kayaking opportunities have never been more accessible.
How does the camping work?
Camping is an exclusive, lottery-based activity limited to 30 participants due to environmental regulations. Those interested will enter the lottery, and participants are randomly selected. Camping is highly weather-dependent, and we cannot guarantee that it will be available on every expedition.
What toilet facilities are available during camping?
We have small portable toilets available to guests during camping.
How are optional activities organised?
For optional activities like kayaking and snowshoeing, participants who sign up will be divided into groups (A, B, C, D, etc.). Each group will take turns participating, with Group A going first, followed by Group B, and so on. How many groups can participate depends on the sea and ice conditions as well as the number of passengers who sign up. While we strive to accommodate as many groups as possible, completing all groups is not guaranteed.
How do I register for activities?
A briefing will be held onboard to explain how to register for optional activities, including their requirements and availability. Some activities will also have their own mandatory briefings, which you must attend to participate.
Can two people share the same tent, and where do we camp?
Yes, our 2-person tent camping option allows you to share a high-performance polar tent with a companion. Camping takes place on the Antarctic landscape, giving you an authentic expedition experience.
We also offer Bivvy Bag Camping, which provides a more immersive, solo-friendly option under the Antarctic sky. Both tent and bivvy camping are designed with weather-ready equipment to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
All camping activities are optional add-ons and can be signed up for once on board. During your orientation, the Expedition Team will explain the practicalities, and with our expanded program, up to 60 guests per night can participate. If interest exceeds availability, a lottery system ensures spaces are allocated fairly.
When do we put our names on the camping list?
You can add your names to the camping list after attending the relevant onboard briefing.
How often is the Polar Plunge activity offered during the trip?
The Polar Plunge is typically offered once per trip.
What should we wear for the Polar Plunge?
Most guests wear swimwear for the Polar Plunge, but you can also opt for long-sleeve tops for added comfort.
Will we stop at the Penguin Post Office?
This depends on the itinerary you booked and the weather conditions we encounter during your expedition.
How do you deal with the Drake Shake?
Seasickness medication, wristbands, and rest provide relief during rough crossings. Please consult your doctor for further guidance. Additionally, motion sickness tablets are available onboard for €1 each, but it's advised to bring your preferred tablets with you.
Can we bring items with us for onshore landings?
Yes, you can bring anything you can carry comfortably in your hand or backpack, such as a camera. However, food is not allowed unless it is medically necessary.
How do payments for optional activities and onboard extras work?
The onboard team will provide a final invoice at the end of the expedition for settlement by card.
How much cash is recommended, and which currencies are accepted?
We do not accept cash payments onboard, but for some excursions outside the Antarctic Peninsula you may wish to bring some local currency. The onboard currency is Euros.
What's the difference between the Sea Explorer Kayak and the Discovery Kayak?
The two experiences differ in size, distance and supervision:
Sea Explorer Kayak: a sturdy, classic kayak for two people, supervised by our activity guides. You'll paddle a longer route, farther from the ship, for approximately 1h30.
Discovery Kayak: an inflatable kayak for one person (solo), paddled on your own within a safe perimeter close to the ship, for approximately 1 hour. Ideal for beginners.
We also have solo and two-person kayaks available, so solo travellers are always accommodated.
How much do the optional activities cost?
Camping costs depend on the option you choose: €439 for tent camping or €350 for a bivvy bag, per person. Kayaking and snowshoeing also carry an additional cost. Final pricing is confirmed onboard.
Is camping offered on more than one night?
Camping is typically offered once per voyage on shorter itineraries, as it's highly weather-dependent and we wait for the best conditions. On longer cruises your chances increase, but good weather can never be guaranteed.
I'm a solo traveller — can I camp solo, and how does tent sharing work?
We offer two camping options: a bivvy bag (solo by nature) or tent camping in 2-person tents. If you choose a tent and are travelling solo, you'll be paired with another solo guest so all tent capacity is used. Couples or shareholders in the same booking are selected together and assigned a shared tent. The cost is per person, with no reduced rate for sharing.
Can I bring battery-operated medical equipment when camping?
Please discuss any medical-equipment needs with the expedition team and onboard medical centre before signing up for camping, so we can confirm what can be safely supported at the camp site.
Are we allowed to sit or kneel during camping?
The "no sitting or kneeling" rule applies around wildlife, to avoid disturbing animals. Camping takes place far from penguin colonies, so once you're at the camp site on the snow you're free to sit and lie down.
Do I snowshoe in the provided muck boots?
Yes, snowshoeing is done in our provided muck boots. Snowshoeing mostly takes place early in the season when there's more snow.
How long are the excursions, and how many landings per day?
Excursion length varies by activity, location and conditions — your expedition team will explain the options once you're onboard. We aim to go ashore at least 1–2 times per day for every day we're in Antarctica, weather permitting. Zodiac cruising and other activities run concurrently so all guests get time off the ship.
With around 500 passengers on MS Nansen and MS Amundsen and only 100 ashore at once, how is landing rotation managed?
While 100 guests are ashore, others can be on a Zodiac cruise, kayaking (our two kayak programmes can take up to 92 guests per session), or attending lectures and workshops onboard. Zodiacs carry 10–12 guests each. There's enough time for everyone to go ashore.
Does the Polar Plunge take place from the ship or on land?
This varies by voyage and depends on the sites visited. Some voyages offer a beach "run into the sea" (such as at Deception Island), while others plunge from the ship or a Zodiac. Your expedition team will explain the options onboard.
Can I join research or Citizen Science projects?
Yes. Our Science & Education Coordinator offers workshops and Science Boat activities. You don't need to pre-register for the Citizen Science programme — it includes recommended apps, onboard science lectures (open to all) and Science Boat activities (booked onboard). Depending on your voyage, science partners may be onboard and invite guests to support their projects.
Can we be in the same excursion group as friends or family?
Yes — let the expedition team know onboard that you're travelling together and they'll place you in the same group. If you're on separate booking numbers, contact our GX Team or your preferred travel agent beforehand so a note can be added.
Do we cross the Antarctic Circle, and is there a certificate?
Specific itineraries are designed to cross the Antarctic Circle — check your voyage details. Guests who cross the Circle can receive a certificate to mark the occasion.
Can we visit research stations?
Since COVID, scientific stations have been closed to visitors to guarantee their safety, so station visits aren't part of the itinerary.
Is there free time to explore or shop in Ushuaia, and do you offer Patagonia pre/post programmes?
Both inbound charter flights to Ushuaia typically give you time to explore the city and shop. Pre- and post-cruise programmes such as Patagonia may be available — check with the GX Team or your preferred travel agent. If applicable, suite guests typically have around 3 hours at Arakur, enough for lunch, the complimentary hike, and the hot tubs or pool. However, this can depend on flights, operational changes and unforeseen circumstances.

What are the chances of seeing whales?
The chances of seeing whales are lower in the early season (October to November) and increase significantly from December onwards when they become more active in the area. We frequently see whales and other Antarctic-specific species, so please bring your binoculars with you and remember you have to be looking to see!
Is the Aurora Australis visible?
No, the Aurora Australis is not visible due to the Midnight Sun during the Antarctic summer.
Will we see baby penguins, and when do penguins arrive?
Penguins arrive from late October and November. On an early-season (October) trip you won't see baby penguins, but the courtship behaviour is beautiful to witness. Later in the season offers better chances of seeing chicks.
Is there an ornithologist on the expedition team?
Yes, ornithologists are part of our expedition team.
Is there organised wildlife or bird watching on the Drake Passage?
Yes, when weather permits, the expedition team runs wildlife observation sessions on the outer decks during the Drake Passage crossing.
Are the animals as curious as in the Galápagos?
The Galápagos and Antarctica are quite different experiences. In Antarctica, we maintain a minimum 5-metre distance from penguins and wildlife. Both are unique and exceptional.
