Science & Education Programme
Unlock your inner scientist. Explore, question and discover with our onboard Science & Education Programme — and change the way you see the world.
Dear fellow explorer,
Welcome to Science & Education at HX Expeditions.
Curiosity has always been at the heart of exploration. It is also at the heart of science. Our Science & Education Programme is designed to bring the two together, helping you look a little closer, ask more questions and better understand the people, places and wildlife you encounter along the way.
Throughout your expedition, our team will help bring each destination to life through science, storytelling and hands-on discovery. In our Science Centres, out on deck and in the field, you can explore what makes these extraordinary places so special, meet and learn from scientists working onboard, and take part in citizen science projects that contribute observations and data to research around the world.
Behind the scenes, there is another important part of what we do. HX ships provide scientists with access to some of the most remote and difficult-to-reach regions on the planet, supporting research that helps us better understand the places we explore and the changes taking place within them.
This is what the HX Spirit of Curiosity means to me: not simply seeing more of the world, but understanding more of what we see.
I hope you will embrace your inner scientist, get involved, ask plenty of questions and leave your expedition seeing the world just a little differently.
Dr. Verena Meraldi | Chief Scientist | HX Expeditions
Delivering a more rounded and hands on experience
Unlock your inner scientist with these hands-on experiences helping you to get a better understanding of the world around where we sail. From researching the impact of climate change on animal populations and sea ice to getting a better understanding of migratory patterns of marine life. There are a range of projects to get involved with as we venture to many beautiful off-the-beaten-track locations.
The Science & Education program brings together like-minded individuals
Covering over 3/4 of the planet's surface, our oceans are vital in supporting human life on earth and are also home to over 90% of all known wildlife. Despite it influencing everything from our weather to transportation and yes, expedition cruises, very little is known about our blue planet.
This is where HX Expeditions and our fleet of small, state-of-the-art Expedition ships come in. We can reach, explore and collect vital scientific data on some of the planet’s most remote regions. From understanding whale migrations and phytoplankton communities to cloud observations and the Northern Lights, our onboard Science & Education Teams - with the help of you, our guests - captures, analyses, and reports invaluable data to organisations and research projects around the world.
Meet the team
Tudor Morgan and Verena Meraldi bring together some of the leading Scientists and experts from around the world to join our voyages as Guest Scientists, as well as driving our sustainability and community focus in the regions we sail. Emily Baxter and Henry Evans work closely with our Expedition Teams to oversee the delivery of our onboard Science & Education program from the Citizen Science projects we support to our diverse lecture and activity programs.
They are all specialists in their fields and have held various posts within the scientific research community, using their knowledge and expertise to contribute to ongoing research projects and providing learning opportunities for our guests.
