Dr. Emily Baxter, Science & Education Senior Manager

Meet Dr. Emily Baxter, HX's Science & Education Senior Manager. Discover how she shapes engaging, hands-on learning experiences across the expedition fleet.

From a lifelong curiosity about the natural world to a career dedicated to science and education, Dr Emily Baxter is passionate about turning knowledge into experiences that inspire others to look closer, ask questions and discover more. As Science & Education Senior Manager, she helps shape how the programme comes to life across the HX fleet, supporting our onboard teams to create engaging, hands-on and meaningful learning experiences for our guests.

“I wanted to be part of a company that looks to the future and believes exploration can be about more than simply seeing the world.

"For me, it's about inspiring curiosity, helping people understand the natural world through their own experiences, and creating those moments that can challenge perspectives and change the way we see our relationship with the planet.”

A passion for the ocean, a purpose in sharing it

Dr Emily Baxter's fascination with wildlife and the natural world began long before her career in science. Despite growing up miles from the nearest beach, she was drawn to marine life from an early age - a curiosity that became a defining passion during a gap year in Australia. There, despite a fear of water, she learned to surf and dive, discovering firsthand the extraordinary worlds both above and beneath the waves.

Determined to understand those worlds better, Emily studied marine biology and oceanography at the University of Plymouth before completing a PhD at University College Cork, investigating the ecology and socio-economic impacts of jellyfish.

Her research and passion for marine ecology have since taken her around the world, from the rugged coastlines of Scotland and Wales to the polar regions.

The moments that inspire what comes next

As Science & Education Senior Manager, Emily works closely with our onboard Expedition Team members to give them the content, resources, training, and support they need to bring science to life across the fleet. Together, they create meaningful opportunities for guests to learn, get hands-on, and contribute, while helping ensure the scientific collaborations we support can be successfully delivered on board.

Seeing those different elements come together, and the experiences they create for guests, is one of the most rewarding parts of Emily's role. Since joining HX, Emily's work has taken her from Norway and Svalbard to Alaska and Antarctica, although the wildlife, history, geology, and cultural diversity of her home, the British Isles, still make them one of her favourite places to explore.
