New Community-Led Excursions in the Northwest Passage – Summer 2025

Set sail on a journey like no other with HX as we introduce a groundbreaking way to explore the Canadian Arctic.

For the first time ever, we’re offering unique, community-led excursions co-designed with Elders and residents. Launching in summer 2025, these immersive experiences will be available exclusively to guests on our two 26-day Northwest Passage sailings—aboard the hybrid-powered MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen.

These carefully crafted excursions offer an intimate connection with the Arctic’s remote and resilient communities, from Gjøa Haven to Pond Inlet and Cambridge Bay.

“Each activity is more than just a tour; it’s an opportunity to engage with the people who call these stunning shores home, learning their stories, traditions, and ways of life.”

With 100% of the excursion revenue going directly to local businesses and individuals in this first year of launch, your adventure helps support sustainable economic growth in the region. Whether it’s participating in Arctic char fishing, engaging in storytelling with Elders, or making art with local artists, you’re invited to take part in an authentic, community-led experience.

A new model for Arctic travel

The Northwest Passage is a route so remote it has been transited fewer than 450 times by ship in recorded history – and you will have the opportunity to take part in locally created, community-led experiences such as:

Storytelling

  • Participating in the lighting of the traditional Qilliq and learning its cultural significance

  • “Arctic Conversations”: small-group discussions with community members about life in the North

  • Storytelling with respected Elders sharing personal experiences and ancestral knowledge

On land activities

  • Guided hikes to local landmarks with Inuit storytelling

  • Arctic char fishing with local harvesters, including learning and participating in traditional techniques like weir fishing.

  • Visiting nearby summer cabins to experience life on the land outside of communities where traditional practices are still maintained

Arts, games, and community connections

  • Collaborative art-making sessions using techniques and materials unique to each region

  • Fun and games, whether joining community events like bingo, card games, or demonstrations of Arctic sports
